Writing
Word Count: The word count for my current work in progress is… 17,845.
The novel I’m writing is coming on nicely. I’m between a quarter and a third of the way through now.
In Plain Sight, Unseen will be available for preorder very soon!
Reading
The remaining books relating to The Dark Tower series, and the order I am reading in, is as follows:
Jerusalem’s Lot (collected in Night Shift)
Salem’s Lot
One For the Road (collected in Night Shift)
It
Insomnia
Everything’s Eventual (collected in Everything’s Eventual)
Low Men in Yellow Coats (collected in Hearts In Atlantis)
Black House
Wizard and Glass
Why do people like The Dark Tower series? The core books in the series are toilet.
Everyone has said book 4, Wizard and Glass, is entirely a flashback to before book 1. The flashback doesn’t start for about 120 pages, and when it does, I was bored and didn’t care.
I’m done with The Dark Tower now. Rubbish.
But, I will read more King for the same reason I started – to learn how he writes characters so well.
The Institute
I started listening to this ahead of the adaptation being released this month. I did read this when it was a new release and enjoyed it. Still got a couple of hours left, but I’m ahead of the series.
Pet Sematary
I’m only fifty pages in, but I’m not into the writing or the story so far.
Watching
The Institute
It’s only a few episodes in so far. It started okay, but I don’t think it’s that strong after four episodes. I’m getting the sense that some of King’s miniseries work better as a short series with only a few episodes. Some of my favourite adaptations are Storm of the Century (original screenplay), IT, The Stand, and The Langoliers. Time will tell if The Institute might have been better suited to that format.
I thought there would be more people – staff and kids – at the institute. I’m not sure why the kids talk by the ice machine so their conversations don’t get picked up by the security system when they could just go in one of their rooms.
I’m not sure that Kalisha should be able to interact with Iris when Avery and Luke communicate with her telepathically.
Why does Tim have access to the crime scene? Why does he take the evidence from the crime scene to his colleague’s house to run it by her without putting it in evidence bags?
There was a cool scene I remember with Luke on a train, but Tim Jamieson’s story has been altered, so he is based in the same town as the institute, so the train scene won’t be in the series.
The Breach
This is an adaptation of the Nick Cutter novel of the same name. I’ve not read the book, but this film should be on your list of Lovecraftian films!
